Germ Blowing

Help children learn about good hygiene with this fun art game!

Using food colouring, children will learn how germs spread when they sneeze or cough without covering their mouth.  Plus create a fun group of germ ‘creatures’ with paint splatter!

Note: this can be a messy one.  Try setting up outside or covering the table and floor with garbage bags to make cleanup easy.

You will need:

  • Food-safe watercolour paint (water and food colouring)
  • Eyedropper or paintbrush
  • Straws
  • Thick white paper
  • A marker to draw eyes or google eyes to glue on

Mix food colouring and water to make whatever colours your children want.

Kids use the eyedropper or paintbrush to place drops of colour on the white paper.  Do one at a time or the colours will run together.

Then, use the straw to blow the liquid across the paper.  Kids can experiment with holding the straw above or beside the paint to make different shapes.

As children blow through the straw, talk to them about what’s happening.

  • How does this relate to germs?
  • What does the way the colour moves tell us about what happens when we sneeze or cough without covering our mouths?

Repeat as many times as your kid wants to make colourful shapes across the paper.

Allow the paint to dry, then draw or glue eyes to each germ creature.

This activity helps kids be creative, explore and interact with the world, make observations and draw conclusions, and share their ideas about how things work!
